THIS SHORT FILM was produced for The New York Times. Nick served as primary editor and had the wonderful opportunity to work closely with the talented photographer Béatrice de Géa to create this subtle yet powerful film the way she experienced it. The video explores the unimaginably painful experience of losing a life partner in mind but not body to a slowly degenerative neurological disease. The story focuses on a wife and husband dealing with the effects of Frontotemporal Dementia, an incurable disease that neuroscientists refer to as “brain atrophy.”
The story avoids focusing on the disease itself and instead zeroes in on acute complexity and pain of experiencing the disease as a spouse or loved one. Through subtle black and white photography and intimate interviews, the film follows the unexpected beauty and bittersweet love that emerges from a lifelong partnership in the face of tragedy.
