The NYT’s commissioned SMM to edit this intimate portrayal of the effects of weight loss surgery, Jessica Shapiro tells of her changing relationship with food and society in the months after a gastric bypass operation — her last resort to combat severe obesity.
A year in the making, this project began in Fall 2015 the day before surgery and followed Jessica’s journey leading up to the surgery and ending in a powerful reflection of the personal and emotional toll of her journey. Seven Mile worked with cinematographer Gareth Smit who filmed Jessica four times over the course of 2015 and 2016, helping him script and layout the story to guide the interviews and shooting before each visit.
